DIFFICULTY LEVEL
APPRENTICE level questions are the easiest type you could get in an exam. Start here if you've only just learned the topic or if you feel like you've forgotten everything!
EXPERT level questions are typical exam problems. They might take a bit of thinking about but they are likely to come up again at some point so it's worth putting the effort in to make sure you fully understand them. Being able to do Expert Questions accurately (and have a go at the Master Questions) is enough for an A* grade.
Make sure you can do Expert Questions before you worry about Master Questions.
MASTER level questions are difficult exam questions which even A* students found difficult in the exam. If you're aiming for an A* then they're worth working through to improve your overall understanding of the topic but unlike Expert Questions, they are unlikely to come up again in exactly this form. Not being able to do Master Questions does not mean you can't get an A*.

- Quadratics! You think you learned everything at GCSE but at A Level you find that quadratics can be tricky beasts. Also, I strongly recommend you use my method for the Binomial Expansion. You won't find it in any books but it's much simpler I promise, and what's more it also works for the second year Binomial Expansion problems where the powers become negative or fractional.

GRAPHS
- You probably don't really love graph sketching and graph transformations but sadly for you, it really is important: not only for the number of marks you get but also because understanding graphs allows you to solve all sorts of problems with functions. Luckily I've made a really simple process called 'the journey of x' to help your sketch be correct every time.

GEOMETRY
- Geometry is hard and its ok to admit that. The main hurdle to get over is the graph sketching. You more or less can't solve lines and circles questions without a sketch. Vectors questions range from ridiculously easy to ridiculously hard. Make sure you can do the easy ones but don't get stressed if you're struggling with the hard ones.

EXPONENTIALS & LOGS
- A difficult and important topic I'm afraid. You need to give yourself time getting used to exponentials and logs because your brain doesn't have anywhere to 'put the information' at first, so it'll feel like you're getting nowhere. Don't worry, this is normal. Be patient with yourself, keep practicing and don't be afraid to ask for help.

TRIGONOMTRY
- No more SOHCAHTOA! At A Level, trig is all about solving equations which have infinitely many SOLUTIONS! Hard to understand, but easy to perform the steps to get the answers. My method is different from any you'll find in a book but please try it - it's so much simpler than the 'graph' or 'quadrant' methods. In the second year, trig is the most important topic of all.

DIFFERENTIATION
- Differentiation is the method we use to solve probelms about the slope of a curve. We can find out where the curve is going up or down, where it's maximum (or minimum) piints are, we can use it to find the equation of a tangent to a curve and for solving problems about optimisation. It's very useful and it's a very big part of second year maths.

INTEGRATION
- Integration is the opposite of differentiation. In maths we use it to find areas under graphs. It's quite fun I think, but a small warning: you will forget 'plus c' many, many times!! In the second year, integration is the hardest topic and I advise you to start learning it as early in the year as possible - but in the first year it's not too bad.

PROOF
- Proving things is what maths after A Level is all about. For now, you'll learn a few simple proofs. To get all the marks, you need to show and explain ALL your working.

SAMPLING & DATA
- Please don't worry about the Large Data Set. It would take ages to study it and it's work a maximum of 3 marks, usually less. I'd say ignore it altogether to be honest!
- Data is a big (quite messy) topic with loads of little fiddly things: mean, median, standard deviation, variance, coding data, histograms, linear interpolation and lots of "explain why...." and "give a reason why..." type questions. Yuk! Words!

CORRELATION & REGRESSION
- Not a big or important topic, it's mostly about recognising outliers on scatter graphs. The questions are often based on the Large Data Set but you can still answer them even if you know nothing about the LDS! There's more interesting things about correlation in the second year.

PROBABILITY
- Most AS Probability questions are about Venn diagrams. The problems and notation are a bit more complicated than you saw in GCSE but not much, and you'll learn about statistically dependent vs independent events.

BINOMIAL DISTRIBUTION
- The most important part of AS Stats, this topic is worth a lot of marks in the exam. It's a way of solving problems where only two things can happen (like tossing a coin, it can only be heads or tails). I admit it does seem complicated at first but it's just a case of sticking things into your calculator really.
- Hypothesis Testing is not an easy concept to get your head around, hypothesis testing will definitely be assessed in the AS exams and there's even more of it in the second year!

CONSTANT ACCELERATION
- Constant acceleration is the simplest type of motion. You'll learn to use vt graphs and suvat equations which you can then use to solve any problem involving constant acceleration. Warning: mechanics questions almost always need a bit of simultaneous equations to finish them off. It can get messy,

VARIABLE ACCELERATION
- Things get a bit more complicated if your particle is slowing down or speeding up at different rates. In these 'variable acceleration' problems, we can't use the suvat equations. Instead, we use calculus (differentiation & integration) to find the displacement, velocity and acceleration of the particle at certain times.

FORCE ACCELERATION PROBLEMS
- The techniques involved here are 1: draw a diagram showing all the forces acting on the particle, then 2: Use the formula $F=ma$ to make some equations, and finally 3: simultaneous equations to find the missing informnation. These are quite fun once you realise they're all the exact same problem!

ALGEBRAIC TECHNIQUES
- You covered almost all techniques in AS. The only new thing is partial fractions which is pretty easy. Please try the binomial expansion the way I teach it? It's not the same as the book but it's simpler and it makes the AS & A level binomial expansions exactly the same method.

- Please don't worry about domain & range, it's 1 mark in the exam: not worth stress! Modulus graphs can be confusing so worth slowing down a bit when you reach that topic.

GEOMETRY
- Here we learn to measure angles in radians which is super important, and we learn a couple of formulae for sectors problems. 3D vectors? Same as 2D vectors - literally. This doesn't make vectors problems easy but at least there's nothing new to learn.

- There's basically nothing new to learn here. Everything you learned about 2D vectors also applies in 3 dimensions! There's no new formulae or techniques here at all, but vectors questions can be hard so probably worth going back to AS Vectors and doing some practice in 2D before moving onto 3D?

- Important important important! There are a LOT of trig identities to learn & it takes a long time to get confident using them so start this topic early and give it a lot of time (but not as much time as integration!)

- I cannot emphasise enough how important the chain rule is. That is all. Practice the chain rule. Become a master of the chain rule.

- This is a funny stand alone topic which is not building on any AS. It's not difficult and also isn't worth too many marks.

PROOF
- There's one extra proof type to learn here. It's called 'proof by contradiction' and I admit it is difficult to understand. Having said that, it doesn't come up every year and it's not worth many marks when it does.

CORRELATION & REGRESSION
- A small addition to the AS, you learn the PMCC which is a measure of how much the scatter graph looks like a line. You also need to do hypothesis tests for correlation but it's the easiest hypothesis test of the three so that's good.

- The most important part of stats in terms of getting marks. At first it can seem much harder than it really is and actually, every question has the same method to solve it. There's hypothesis testing in here too so it's best if you're confident on this from AS.

- The concepts of meiosis & genetic variation are key when it comes to understanding the A level topic of inheritance so make sure that you're comfortable with this. Questions on mutations will nearly always link into protein structure so have a look at some past paper questions for examples.
